Makhmalbaf Wins Special Award in Greek Film Festival

TEHRAN - The Iranian film Seeb (apple) by young director Samira Makhmalbaf won the Special Mention' award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival in Greece. According to IRNA, the awards were announced by the 7-member international jury in Thessaloniki, 500 kms north of Athens, Sunday night. The jury said Seeb was given the award - a certificate - for the poetic way in which it treats one of the most important social problems of Iran." Seeb was among the twelve official entries at the 39th international thessaloniki film festival held November 13-22. The best full length film award - Golden Alexander - (12.5 million drachmas) went to Japanese film Fishes in August' by Yoichiro Takahashi. The special jury award - Silver Alexander - (7.5 million drachmas) was shared by two films, the Flight of the Bee' a joint production by Jamshed Usmanov of Tajikistan and Byoing Hun Min of Korea, and Buttoners' by Peter Zelenka of the Czech Republic. The best director award was won by Greek Constantine Giannaris for the film From the Edge of the City'. The best screenplay award went to Peter Zelenka of the Czech Republic for the originality of the dialogue and the outstanding story construction of the film Buttoners. Jeanne Balibar of France won the best actress award for her role in the film God's Got My Number'. Mehmet Kurtulus won the best actor award for his role in the German film short sharp shock' directed by Fatih Akin. The artistic achievements award went to Spring in My Hometown' by Kwangmo Lee of Korea. In a statement, the international jury said it has been impressed by the exceptional artistic quality of the film selection which underlines the ever growing importance of the Thessaloniki Film Festival as prime showcase for the emerging filmmakers worldwide.
